Hadrian’s Wall is a historic Roman fortification which was constructed in 122AD under orders of Emperor Hadrian. The wall is 80 miles long and runs across the country East to West, sea to sea. It was built to separate the Romans from the Barbarians, and to control immigration and trade.
Hadrian’s Wall is a popular walk amongst outdoor enthusiasts and tends to be completed in sections.
Sections 5 and 6 are the Western most sections and lie in close proximity to High Gaitle.
Section 5 of Hadrian’s Wall extends from Walton to Carlisle and runs through the Eden Valley, the River Eden and finally to Carlisle Castle through the urban streets of the city. This section is around 11 miles long but can be broken down into smaller chunks with ease.
Section 6 runs from Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway. This section takes you from urban Carlisle, along the River Eden, past Drumburgh Castle, and finally onto Bowness-on-Solway. At Rampart’s Head you’ll find the marker for the end of the Hadrian’s Wall.
