40 minutes away from High Gaitle lies Bassenthwaite Lake, the most northly lake in the Lake District National Park. Skiddaw, one of the highest mountains in England lies to the East of Bassenthwaite. It stands at 931m or 3,054 feet at its peak and is a very popular hike for outdoor lovers. Skiddaw is one of a group of fells, hills and mountains called Wainwrights of which there are 214 across the Lake District.
To undertake Skiddaw there is a well marked path from Dodd Wood. The walk can be done as a direct route or as a circular taking in other Wainwrights such as Latrigg, Skiddaw Little Man, Lonscale Fell or Ullock Pike, Long Side, Carl Side and Bakestall. The options are endless and the achievements plentiful!
