Carlisle – Cambrian City
Just 20 minutes away, Carlisle is the largest settlement and the only city in Cumbria, with a rich history shaped by the Romans, medieval builders and modern life 🏰✨
Carlisle began as Luguvalium, a Roman town supporting Hadrian’s Wall. Positioned on key supply routes, it grew into a bustling market and military centre, complete with a huge fort at Stanwix and a thriving civilian settlement. Many Roman discoveries are displayed locally, and parts of the city centre still follow the original Roman street grid.
After the Norman Conquest, Carlisle’s strategic importance led to powerful new defences. Carlisle Castle, built in the 11th and 12th centuries, still dominates the skyline with its striking red sandstone keep. Nearby, Carlisle Cathedral, founded in 1122, is famous for its medieval choir stalls and its glowing 14th‑century east window which is one of the finest in the country.
Modern Carlisle is compact, walkable and full of things to do. Explore the castle and cathedral, dive into Roman and Border history at Tullie, then enjoy the city’s independent shops, cafés and restaurants. There’s always something happening too, football at Brunton Park, live music at The Old Fire Station, and big events at The Sands Centre.
