Brow well – home of the healing waters of chalybeate spring
Hidden along the quiet Solway coast, Brow Well is a small but deeply significant historic site, once famous in the 18th century for the supposed healing powers of its iron‑rich waters 💧✨
This chalybeate spring, containing high levels of iron salts, was believed to offer health benefits to those who drank or bathed in it (though the water is not drinkable today). A signed path leads you to the well, complete with an information panel and flagpole that help bring its story to life.
Brow Well’s survival into the modern era is largely thanks to its powerful connection with Robert Burns. In 1796, suffering from rheumatic fever, Burns travelled here in the hope that the waters might cure him. He drank from the spring and bathed in its waters, but tragically passed away just days later.
Since then, Brow Well has become a quiet place of pilgrimage for Burns admirers from around the world, a spot where people come to reflect, remember and connect with Scotland’s national poet.
