Brough Castle – a place of scenic history
Around one hour from High Gaitle, the dramatic ruins of Brough Castle sit high on a ridge overlooking the strategic Stainmore Pass, on the very site of an ancient Roman fort 🏰✨
Built around 1092, the original motte‑and‑bailey castle was repeatedly attacked by the Scots, and was destroyed in 1174 during the Great Revolt against Henry II. Conflict continued throughout the 12th century, leaving its mark on the region and the castle’s turbulent history.
One of the most famous events came in 1521, when a devastating fire broke out during a lavish Christmas feast, destroying large parts of the castle beyond repair. Despite this, the remaining structure is still incredibly impressive, with sweeping views and a real sense of its medieval past.
The best part, you can visit for free. Just be sure to check seasonal opening times before you go. And when you’re finished exploring, there’s a lovely ice‑cream parlour and tea room right next to the site, perfect for a well‑earned break.
Historic, atmospheric and wonderfully scenic, Brough Castle makes a great stop for anyone who loves a bit of adventure and storytelling in their day out 🌿🗡️
