If you’re looking for a proper Lake District challenge, Blencathra is one of the most iconic peaks you can take on and it’s only 45 minutes from High Gaitle, making it ideal for a full day out in the hills ⛰️✨
Standing at 868 metres, Blencathra is one of the most recognisable of the 214 Wainwrights, famous for its dramatic rocky slopes and perfectly symmetrical shape. It’s also home to one of the UK’s most renowned ridges, Sharp Edge, a narrow, exposed scramble that’s only suitable for experienced walkers, but unforgettable for those who take it on.
There are plenty of routes to the top, including a popular 3‑mile curving ridge that takes in six separate tops such as Hallsfell Top, Blease Fell and Scales Fell. Each offers incredible views and a real sense of achievement as you work your way along the mountain.
Parking is available in Scales or Threlkeld, but because Blencathra is such a well‑loved peak, spaces fill up quickly, so an early start is definitely worth it.
