Derwentwater – Lake District

One of the most northerly of the English Lakes, Derwentwater stretches 3 miles long, 1 mile wide, and reaches depths of around 72 feet. Its name means “lake of the river with many oak trees”, and with its wooded shores, peaceful islands and dramatic mountain backdrop, it’s one of the most atmospheric places you can visit.
You can explore the lake and surrounding area entirely on foot, with suggested walking routes available from the National Trust shop at Lakeside Car Park. Or, if you prefer something more relaxed, hop aboard the Derwentwater passenger launch. These round‑trip cruises stop at Ashness, Lodore, High Brandlehow, Low Brandlehow, Hawes End and Nichol End, perfect for a hop‑on, hop‑off adventure.
